Aim for Perfect Posture

When you are recovering from a back injury keeping the proper posture is more important than ever. Make sure when you are riding in the car, you use proper posture by elevating your knees higher than your hips and keeping your back as straight as possible. You will also want to make sure that your head is in proper alignment as well, meaning your chin should be pulled in so that your head sits directly on top of your spine.

Travel in Segments

It is important to make sure you break your trip up into segments if you are taking a long road trip following an injury. Sitting for extended periods of time in the same position will not only cause the muscles in your back to stiffen, long-term sitting can lead to muscle spasms. Plan your trip so that you will have the ability to stop every 30 minutes. This will allow you to get out of the car and walk around and stretch your muscles.

Keep it Cool

If you are experiencing acute back pain, keep a cooler in your car and add ice packs. Use the ice packs to reduce inflammation and numb the sore areas. Be sure to use a towel to provide a barrier between the pack and your skin. Here at West Knoxville Chiropractic, we are here to make sure you not only recover from your injuries, but our chiropractor also wants to be sure you know how to care for your back and spine for years to come.
